The third day of the Queen Charlotte Track is the longest, but definitely the most rewarding! Views of both the Marlborough Sounds and Kenepuru Sound throughout the walk from Camp Bay to Portage Bay make this a stunning hike.

Day 3 – Camp Bay to Torea Saddle/Portage Bay

(Approx. 8 hours/22.5km)

The big day! Today’s walk is a challenging but rewarding day on the ridgeline between Camp Bay & Torea Saddle near Portage Bay with views of both Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru Sounds.

Begin with a climb out of the inlet to the Kenepuru Saddle to re-join the track proper after a night’s rest. This will be your first glimpse of the turquoise waters of Kenepuru Sound in the distance.

The track today passes mainly through regenerating native forest and is most famous for its spectacular views rather than bush. Truly grand vistas abound round every corner. The highest point you will reach today is just under 400m.

Two shelters along the way provide welcome respite, spectacular views and toilet and water facilities. Bay of Many Coves Shelter (3 hours) is located on a crest overlooking the bay from which it takes its name. Black Rock Shelter (6 hours) faces back towards Picton township and is a great spot to watch the interisland ferries glide by while having a cup of tea.

The last one and a half hours today is spent strolling gently downhill through lush native beech forest, groves of nikau palms, kawakawa and other native foliage.

And remember, those who feel like a day’s rest can opt for a boat ride around the bays of the Queen Charlotte Sound to Portage Bay instead!
